Pipe Bursting Process

Pipe bursting is a system by which the pneumatic burster unit splits the existing pipe while simultaneously installing a new Polythylene Pipe of the same size or larger size pipe where the old pipe existed, then reconnect existing sewer service house connections, television inspection of the Polyethylene Pipe and complete the installation in accordance with the contract documents. Only Pneumatically operated equipment with either front or rear expanders for the proper connection to the Polyethylene Pipe will be allowed for use. The pneumatic tool must be used in conjunction with a constant tension hydraulic twin Capstan Winch of either 20, 10 or 5 tons, the size of the winch depends on the diameter of the pipe to be replaced. In no case is the constant tension on the winch to exceed 20 tons.

Pipe Bursting ProcessWith this system you can replace pipe size for size or upsize with PE pipe, and PVC or Fiberglass. GRUNDOCRACK® bursts Clay, Concrete, Cast Iron, and PVC.

The winch is important because it provides necessary friction to the pneumatic tool, and guides it through the pipe or conduit. The tool is launched directly into the failing pipe. The combined effect of the percussive action of the pneumatic tool and constant tension from the winch enables the tool to effectively burst through the old pipe. The expander pushes and compacts the old pipe fragments and surrounding soil out of the way for the safe installation of the new pipe.

The new PE or PVC pipe, attached to the back of the tool. follows the tool into the bore. Because the expander is selected with the OD in mind, a tight fit is guaranteed.
